Communicating a cohesive personal brand story as a Product Manger

Since this week I couldn’t share this newsletter on Monday. I am sharing this off-cycle post on a Thursday. But I am going to share a couple of additional posts to make up for that. :)

Sharing a few strategies I have tested over and over and have worked for me personally.

Not all PM roles are the same. Product management is just not one size fits all.  Don’t copy and paste a generic resume. It won’t get you too far.

  1. Resumes

    1. I have 2 resumes -one generic covering overall experience and one that highlights - “my domain experience” + “PM function experience”.

    2. Look at what companies are looking for. Some job postings are very very generic.

    3. Reach out to the recruiter and ask for a deeper explanation of the role. And then match update your resume only with relevant experience with what the hiring manager is exactly looking for.

  2. Your cover letter

    1. Unpopular opinion - I don’t write a cover letter for all jobs I am applying for.🤷‍♀️

    2. Sometimes my resume speaks for itself because job requirements are a very high match with my skill set. But if I apply for a job that’s a stretch than my current skill set I take time to write a very precise cover letter covering a max 3-5 bullets of - “why I am the best person for the job”.

  3. LinkedIn story

    1. Your LinkedIn should showcase your current skills plus the topics you are passionate about.

    2. Don’t “like” random memes and engage in political discussions if that’s not your area in your career.🙅‍♀️

    3. “Comment” meaningfully and thoughtfully on LinkedIn in your area of interest. It will show in your activity area.

    4. My LinkedIn has 4 areas I interact with — product management, Fintech news, creator economy, and lastly startup building. I don’t engage with any other content and in fact, unfollow too.

    5. choose your interest areas wisely.

  4. Consistency — is the key to any success.

    1. The more consistent you are in using LinkedIn meaningfully and other job app platforms - the sooner it will yield results.

    2. Choose a consistent rhythm – whether it’s daily weekly or bi-weekly choose one and commit to it. Meaning if you are applying for jobs pick a day and apply weekly, monitor results, and tweak actions accordingly.

    3. Choppy consistency when you apply one day and then don’t apply for 2 days and then again apply 2-3 days in my experience is Actually 5x the effort but not desired result.
